When your life is on the line—or when you simply need to get from point A to point Z with urgency—there’s no such thing as “cheating.” Using a GPS for land navigation may feel like it, but only if you know how to use it effectively.

This 1-day GPS class starts with classroom instruction covering the basic features and functions of modern handheld GPS units. Once those essentials are mastered, students head outdoors for hands-on navigation exercises, culminating in a simulated real-world land navigation scenario.

While most GPS units share similar functionality, this workshop uses Garmin eTrex and GPSMAP models as the primary training tools. Students are welcome to bring their own GPS units, but should review their owner’s manual and be familiar with their model’s functionality before class.

This workshop is ideal for anyone preparing for outdoor adventures, emergency readiness, or professional applications where GPS navigation skills are mission-critical.

• Notepad and pen

• Handheld Garmin GPS Unit (eTrex or GPSMAP series)

• Extra batteries or USB battery pack with appropriate cable to power GPS

• Handheld radio capable of broadcasting on FRS frequencies (Loaners available)

• Whistle

• Weather & Activity Appropriate Clothing (You will be going “off trail” and class is rain or shine)
